México tuvo un brote anterior de RHDV en 1988-1989 cuando millones de conejos perecieron. Según el gobierno mexicano, la Organización Mundial de Sanidad Animal / OIE tardó 3 años en confirmar que el RHDV había sido erradicado en México en 1993.
Hoy en México, hay 11,560 unidades de producción de cría de conejos con 1,108,350 conejos domésticos. Los estados con las granjas de cría de conejos más registradas son: el Estado de México con 3,885 unidades y un total de 293,332 animales, e Hidalgo con 1,664 unidades y 274,811 conejos

Mexico had a previous RHDV outbreak in 1988-1989 when millions of rabbits perished. According to the Mexican government, it took the World Animal Health Organization/OIE 3 years to confirm RHDV had been eradicated in Mexico in 1993.
